Introduction to Music: The Listening Experience (MUGN 201)

An introduction to listening, in three units:

• Musical features: dance, song, space, harmony, form, creative reuse
• Making meaning: story, religion, social class, gender, power, race, authenticity
• Musical ex/change: notation, printing, globalization, recording, the internet

In the notation project, students invent their own notation for something Western notation doesn't capture, such as a film scene, an improvisation, or a soundscape.
